Below are some of our most frequently asked questions about the Parachute Association or Ireland and skydiving in general.
The simple answer is YES!
However with the experience and training available in our affiliated clubs the risks are minimised.
Nonetheless there is ALWAYS A RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
Our Clubs can help you to make a TANDEM JUMP, AFF or a SOLO JUMP.
TANDEM Jumps require a short period of training as the Tandem Master does most of the work during the jump, which may be from any height above 7,500ft.
SOLO AFF (Accelerated Free Fall) jump requires a full day's training and is made from above 9,000ft freefalling to 4,500ft with one or two AFF Instructors by your side.
SOLO STATIC LINE jumps require a full day's training. The jump is made from 3,200ft. and the jumper is in sole control of the descent, usually guided by radio from the ground.
No. The Solo jump course can train you to make your first descent without having made a Tandem Jump.
Skydiving usually involves free-falling from the aircraft. During this time the speed reached is about 200km/h.
The Parachute is used to stop the fall and to lower the skydiver safely to the ground. Parachutes are normally deployed high enough to give the jumper a canopy ride of three to four minutes.
All Parachutists jumping at affiliated centre's contribute to the association by renewing annually their PAI membership. First jumpers are admitted to the PAI at a reduced rate which is normally included in their initial Club Membership and Training Fee.
The PAI sponsors Specialist Training/Instruction Courses for its members by both directly funding these courses or by way of grant in aid to jumpers who may have to travel abroad to aquire specialist training.
Contact any of our affiliated clubs from our links page. Visit their site and see what they have on offer.
Feel free to call into any of the centres where these clubs operate and see the activity at first hand.
